Welcome to the building digital capability service

We are pleased to welcome you to the building digital capabilities service which includes access to our discovery tool.

Getting started with building digital capability

Onboarding call

We strongly recommend that you join us for an onboarding call before you get going. In the call, we will give you an overview of the website and some of the resources it contains. We'll also give you a tour of the discovery tool and talk you through how you can view and use the data the tool generates.

The webinar will last about an hour, and you are welcome to invite any colleagues who may be involved in rolling out the service into your organisation to attend too. Please let us know your availability, and we can get this arranged.

Assigning your organisational contacts

Once you have decided who you would like to have access to your organisational data, or who should have permission to add local resources to the tool, please let us know by completing our access control request form. Note: these contacts will need to have logged in to the tool before we can provide these permissions.

It is helpful if a member of staff has logged in successfully before the initial onboarding call – this helps us to resolve any initial access issues.

Five key steps to get you underway

There is a lot of advice and guidance on the resources and community pages to help you, we have selected just a few of these to help you get started:

Step 1: strategic planning

  • Think about how the service and discovery tool will work best for your organisation
  • Consider establishing a stakeholder group to plan collaboratively and secure valuable 'buy in' – who might you involve? Perhaps those with overlapping remits or specific interests like those involved in staff development, HR teams, subject specialists, programme heads? Who you invite will depend on the structure in your organisation and how developing staff digital capabilities sits alongside other key objectives
  • Tools that others have found useful to trigger strategic planning discussions include our organisational maturity model which will help you to identify where your college currently is and determine what is important to you as you move forward
  • Additional tools and guidance are available in the resources and community pages, including:

Step 2: find out what others are doing

Every organisation is unique. Use our case studies to identify how other organisations are using the service and the discovery tool to start to build approaches that meet your needs and ambitions.

Step 3: discovery tool practicalities

Our guidance on the discovery tool pages will help you find out more about:

  • Explaining the process for users when logging in for the first time
  • How to access and understand your data
  • How to add your own resources to the discovery tool
  • The best way to present the discovery tool in your context.
  • FAQs and a glossary of terms

See also our recorded support webinars on a variety of topics.

Step 4: join the community

Step 5: come along to one of our events

  • Why not join us for one of our regular support webinars or attend one of our twice yearly events combining digital capability and digital experience insights communities
  • Please see our community of practice page for information on both upcoming community of practice and support events

Note: recordings, presentations and resources from past events are also available from the community of practice page.
